How do I know if my tree has Emerald Ash Borer damage?

Emerald ash borers are a major concern for ash trees in Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Look out for thinning foliage, D-shaped exit holes in the bark, vertical splits, or areas where woodpeckers are actively feeding (a phenomenon called “blonding”). If you spot these, it’s crucial to act quickly; early treatment with systemic insecticides can help, but more severe infestations typically require removing the tree. Learn more in our guide.

Can frost damage hurt my trees in the spring?

Yes, late-spring frosts can severely impact new buds and young leaves, causing them to blacken or wilt. These frosts are still possible in early May around here, especially after a cold snap with temperatures below 32°F. Repeated damage can weaken your tree over time. To reduce risk, postpone pruning until after the last frost and look into protective wraps or anti-transpirant sprays. Learn more about winter recovery.

My tree’s roots are exposed, what should I do?

Exposed roots can occur due to erosion, heavy foot traffic, or trees with naturally shallow root systems. While some exposure is normal, significant root exposure can stress your tree, making it prone to disease or structural instability. You don’t want to bury them under too much soil or mulch, but a light layer of mulch can help.

What causes sawdust around the base of my pine tree?

That sawdust (called “frass”) around the base of a pine usually signals wood-boring insects, often pine bark beetles. These pests burrow under the bark, weakening the tree and opening pathways for disease. The recommended response is to have an arborist inspect the tree. Treatments like targeted insecticide sprays can help if caught early, but larger infestations may require pruning or removal.
